Happy New Year!

Happy Holiday Greetings! Just made it in time to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
Although it's technically a few days away still from New Year, but everyone's already in a holiday mood, and before we know it, Christmas is already over! What I like best about the year end holidays is that both Christmas and New Year is so close together, that we are constantly in that holiday mood for that entire week, and have more time to be with our family and loved ones.

I had been busy the week before Christmas, with work, miniature work, preparing orders, new ideas for 2011...

2010 gone by rather quickly! It was a year of change and new challenges. The new year will bring even more new challenges, but I hope to embrace all of them and more importantly, to enjoy the journey.

I don't really have new year resolutions, but one which I really want to achieve is to provide great valuable miniature contents on this blog in the next year, so this is something I will work hard in the next year!

Thank you for staying and reading my blog throughout the year, I'm appreciative of all the comments and the friends that I made through here.

Wish all of you a fabulous New Year! See you next year!! :D

Elegant Profiteroles Ring

I was experimenting with the miniature profiteroles I made a while ago, when I thought, what if I made them into a wearable ring? So I did just that, and started decorating it. Then I decided to add in a rose, and made use of the fuchsia gerbera daisies. I thought it was a perfect combination!

It came out looking pretty elegant I think! So pretty from all angles...

Elegant Macaron Ring

I made a macaron ring last weekend. Using the colours I so lovingly adore, I made it into a feminine, elegant macaron ring. Definitely an eye catcher wearing it!

See it on my hand!

The making of 1:12 scale Christmas Train

Every year, I try to come up with a new christmas miniature art piece. The idea of a 1:12 scale christmas train came up 2 years ago, but back then, for several reasons, I did not have the chance to attempt it. The reasons include not having enough time, not having the skills! (it is true), and I just have not figured out how to go about realizing it.

I started working on this design mid July this year. 2 years ago, I started my research on gingerbread christmas trains. Just go to Google and you will find many images of the real gingerbread christmas trains. I did another research again this year, and spent some time looking at images and figuring out how to adapt it into a 1:12 scale miniature piece. At the same time for me, it's also about injecting my personal style through the art piece.

There were many considerations, but first I had to come up with a design. Some people prefer drawing various designs on a sketch book. I work a different way though. I dive right in. Nothing beats just getting down and experimenting it. Because there wasn't a miniature "template" to begin with, I just create it from scratch, based on the image of my ideal miniature train in mind. What you see in the photo below is the result of my first piece. The only changes I did was the decoration of the train.

After I assembled the train, I sent several photos to a few friends showing them my new design, and I spent more time finalizing the decorations. I changed several things along the way and am pleased with the final result!

This is now being offered as a Christmas workshop to all who are interested to learn to make this unique 1:12 scale miniature Christmas Train art piece. Impress your family and friends with a realistic hand created miniature art work of your own! This workshop will be made available all year round, so even if you can't complete it by this Christmas, there's always Christmas next year! :D

Teaching

You know, it was only after I started teaching miniature classes recently that I realized that it meant something to me on a deeper level. Knowing that at the end of the day, my student really love what they have accomplished and learnt something that they never knew they could make with their own hands is indescribable.

Another big satisfaction for me was being able to develop a new way to help my student create the miniatures. I'm learning something myself here every time I teach.

Right now, I'm grateful for all the opportunities!

1:12 Scale Pink Gerbera Daisies Hand Bouquet

It seems all I do lately are just flowers, which is really quite true. It's still very much on my mind and lately my work revolves around flowers.

Just the other day, I was experimenting the colours of the stamen of the gerbera daisies. I get excited when I achieve another realistic variety of gerbera daisies. All the stamen are hand painted by me, so it does take time.

I made a hand bouquet yesterday. This morning, I took pictures of them in my hands.

Enjoy!

1:12 scale Macaron Display

I made some more 1:12 scale macarons over the weekend. I like to think that it's because I love the muted pastel pink colours and so it comes naturally to me. I would make a bunch in different shades, and arrange them till I find the nicest combination. Mixing colour is really the key here. The good thing is, it can be done and with practice, it will get easier and easier each time because you're more confident in mixing the colour. You develop an eye for colours and also know what are the shades that goes well together. Knead quickly and here you go!

Pink Roses...

It was great working on my real flora arrangement yesterday. The flowers were fresh and gave such a lovely scent. I really like inhaling the scent, it smells so green and fragrant.
The only thing is, the roses weren't in full bloom yet, so which made the arrangement a little hard (many empty spaces). It bloomed a little more this morning and hopefully in the next few days, it will look even better.

Love this pink.

I mist the flowers in the morning before I took the photos :)

Flora arrangement is kind of addicting.

White paint

Woke up early today, 7am on a Saturday morning! I really have a lot to accomplish today.

I was also eager to take some photographs.

A coat of white paint & a little distressing is all it takes to change some things...

1:12 scale rose adorned tray

Just a few pink roses...and a rose adorned tray is born!

I love it. :) How about you?

I'm not teaching this Saturday, so it is a off day for me. I've plans to go back to the flora school to get more flowers for my flora practice session.

I've tried to ask a few nurseries, but either they don't sell a whole lot of variety or they sell in a bundle. I don't need them in bundles. In the end, I called up the school and I can get the flowers from them. Works well for me.

I hope to share some photos this weekend!

I'm so in love with it...Thanks again Susan, I'll forever treasure it, and they will appear in a lot of my photographs now...;)

See how my cake looks on it...

Flower Arrangement

I had lots of fun yesterday evening attending a flower arrangement class with a few friends. And I mean it's REAL flora arrangement; not miniatures.

Now that I am getting more interested in flowers, I thought it would be really interesting to attend one. Working with fresh flowers is really therapeutic and you can't help but feel happy. All your senses are "enlightened" so to speak.

Maybe more so in the local scene, flora arrangement gives an impression that - it's usually taken up by retirees, people who has too much free time on their hands, or maybe people who are crazy. I guess it's a little like miniatures.

Flora arrangement is also not what a lot of people think - just angle things the way you want it; afterall it's about art and art is free expression right?

But there are guidelines and foundation with regards to flora arrangement. In a short time span, I realized there are real steps and basic foundation rules. I'm pretty amazed and intrigued that at the end of it, I can make a nice round table flower arrangement. I came out of class feeling that time was well spent!

I've never seen such a nice shade of cadmium yellow for roses. I just love it. I also love the light green listome.

Enjoy!!

1:12 scale Macaron Display

I've been working on this for a little while. First, I decided on the colour tones of the roses. My friend Marie loves them! Then I made the roses in bulk, before working on the macarons. This time round, I wanted a little different, and added buttery yellow roses. I also made a very pale pink one. I really like how the colours turned out. Overall, it's very calming to look at ;)

I have some ideas on the next one, equally calming I hope!!

1:12 scale soft pink rose wreath

Since the last time I started making roses again, I couldn't keep my hands off from making roses. This time round, I made a soft pink rose wreath, which came out really nicely. The soft colours brings out a romantic feel to this.

Diameter of the rose wreath is about 2.8cm. There are also four tones of pink in this wreath.

Took a picture of how it looks in my hand too. ;)

It's been sold. Thank you :)

Did you know the story behind "Fallen"?

Last weekend, I was having fun listening to "old" songs while working on my miniatures. One of the older tracks I was listening to was "Fallen" by Lauren Woods. I hope most of you would know that song. It was so popular in the movie "Pretty Woman" by Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

Anyway, I google on Lauren Woods, and realized that she wrote the song around 1979!! It was produced in an album in 1981, but didn't make it as a soundtrack of the album because the record company felt it had no chorus or real drums. 10 years later, the song was re-mixed and made it into"Pretty Woman" in 1990. The rest is history.

Perhaps the next time you hear this song, you'll have new found respect for it. I truly did.

It took her 10 over years. That's sheer dedication and patience. And I believe she never gave up on her passion. Some might say, it's luck. But what is luck if you are not prepared, and if you didn't believe in it?

I shall always remind myself about that.. And if it is your passion, never take no for an answer. ;)

Just Experimenting

Revisited miniature roses making lately again. Here's a picture I took recently on the roses I did while experimenting colours. I took it together with the pot of peonies (on the way to Dales!) just so that there is some colour comparison.

I wanted to make really light coloured roses, with just a tint of pink. I liked how they turned out looking very delicate. :)

Ok, back to making some more roses.

New Look!

It's been a while! Do you like the new look on my blog? I have to thank Catherine of Avalon Rose Designs for creating this for me. She's a wonderful designer and I just love her style so much. I am so glad she captured the little aspects of me in this design. I love colours; I want people to be happy upon coming here. I want it a little homely, and having yummy treats all around.

I've been working on my webpage for a while now too, thinking through what I want to have on there, and it did take some time. Though it's still work in progress I think, but I am happy to have come through so far.

I also want to announce that I'm officially starting to teach adult classes, in creating 1:12 scale miniature art. :) It has taken me a long time to conceptualize things, putting things, ideas into place and deciding to do it. I will be adding more classes slowly, but will first start with this.

1:12 Scale Aluminium Square Griddle Decor

This is another inspiration I took from a home decor book. I get so excited when I see the possibility of turning things into 1:12 scale miniatures.
I saw a photo of a clean white decorative pan. The frying pan or the aluminium square griddle doesn't have to stay on the stove! The person who have these ideas is just ingenious.

So, I tried to make one myself, and turn it into a home decor piece (in miniature scale, of course!).

I love the outcome. And this is just such a great decorative piece. Imagine it on your dollhouse kitchen wall. Just so charming! Oh, and I made the decal myself too. In literal translation, it means "The House of Nature".

Duo Religieuses

Just sometime a while ago, my friend Marie forwarded me a photo of "Duo Religieuses". I believe most of us, including myself would probably have heard of Religieuses, but this is the first time I have heard and seen a photo of Duo Religieuses. I wouldn't have thought such a pastry existed if Marie didn't show me a photo of it, but now I know! According to her, it's not very well known, but just so special and different!

I made a miniature version of that, at the request of my dear friend. :)

The real edible version

Air Dry Clay, Colours and Macarons

The most important thing about making dollhouse miniatures macarons for me is the colour, especially if I am making it as a display.

These days, I no longer just use a tube of colour for one shade of macaron. A shade of pink is a mix and match of 2-3 other colours together, and I don't mean just white and red. Although in colour term, white and red produces pink, but when it comes to air dry clay (and depending on what clay you're using), white means a totally different thing. I mix colours into the air dry clay until I find the right shade of pink. The tough part about this is, if I knead it too much and the clay becomes dry, I can't use it anymore and would have to trash it.

Just the other day, I was looking at some macaron pictures in a book I found, and I just had to get those muted shades. The challenge with those muted shades is that you can't achieve them by just adding a main colour and white. All of the shades achieved here, were a combination of several colours together. Even a little dab of each does make a difference.

And guess what, by the time I found the right combination, I don't remember how much of each and what I've added, because I have tubes of paint lying around. LoL.

The below photo is an illustration of that experiment. I'm happy with these muted soft shades.
Alot of work just to get those colours right, but the end results were worth it :)

1:12 Scale Macaron Display

We had a long weekend here, and I was quite pleased that my weekend went very productive. ;)
Went to the dentist, then got a craft book and also completed a miniature macaron display.

Inspired by a real photo I saw here http://www.flickr.com/photos/sweetmerveilles/4801607773/, I was just so inspired by it and knew I had to make a miniature version of it. As my tray was a 3 tier tray, I decided to include a rose arrangement on the top :)

The height of my miniature & inedible version is approximately 5cm. Base is 3.5cm.

The most tedious part making this, was definitely the roses.

I was really excited and happy putting this piece together, as my mind drifts off to imagine more possibilities. Variety of colours...

You know by now I really love colours..;)

No pics!

I did quite a good progress on my snacks miniature shelf this weekend. I finished folding 18 miniature pocky boxes. But there are still a few other ranges to go for pocky. AND...my old PC decided it was time to retire. I couldn't get it started on Sunday. It has been for 4 years, and it's about time to change a new one, so I ordered a new laptop (to make more space on my table). That would arrive in a week. Therefore, I can only post pics up after I get my new laptop!

Have a great week!

1:12 Scale Elegant White Meringue Tower

I made this 1:12 scale elegant white meringue tower just last week. Was undecided on the colour scheme, but I later decided to go for all white. I'm happy how it turns out. Very clean, pristine and serene.

This is now available at my etsy shop: http://www.miniaturepatisserie.etsy.com

Should I make a pink one next? Hmmmm....

Torched Meringue and Strawberry Charlotte Cake

I made this just recently. It was my first try attempting to make meringue charlotte cake. In fact, some experiment lead to the result of the torched meringue. I loved the slightly torched look. How about you?

This charlotte cake is a gift for my friend Marie. ^^

This is much larger than the usual 1:12 scale that I normally make. It measures 3cm wide and 1.4cm tall. I don't really know what scale this falls into, because I'm not good with other scales and I'm just not really good in Math period. LOL

I have another torched meringue strawberry charlotte cake available over at my dollhouse miniatures store. :)

Planning another Giveaway!

It's never too early to plan another giveaway, I think! It's a blessing to know people read my blog, even though these days, I don't really have time to write very much! But this weekend, I should have something up!

Anyway, I thought of planning another giveaway when I have 200 followers. That should also give me some time to plan something special!

So yes, that is the decision! I'll put up the post for the giveaway when I reach that target, and then the draw would begin.

Looking forward to the weekend already! I'm meeting an ex-colleague from my previous company this evening for dinner and shopping. :)

1:12 Scale Miniature Strawberries

Made a lot of 1:12 scale strawberries over the weekend, it was pretty tedious. I had these plastic containers for a few years now (no joke!) but never had the chance to use them until now.

There are like...almost 20 strawberries in the plastic containers. As I had to make 2 boxes, that means about 40 strawberries...........lol

It's tedious because you need to make the fruit first, then the leaves go on top of it, and then the stem. I still think I can do better with the colour for the next time round!

I'm intending to make another piece, so that means MORE strawberries to go.

Until then...I'll take a step at a time. :)

Miniature snacks

I spent the last few days working fervently on these miniature snack boxes, and it only filled up half a tier of the top supermarket shelf. I'm a proud owner of a miniature supermarket grocery shelf, all thanks to Amy and Tony :)

I don't know when I would ever finish filling up the shelves, but I'll work on it whenever I can. It will be spectacular when it's completed..

Short Note...

Been a while I know...work has been busy but I'm learning lots, which is good. I was glad I had the chance to meet up with a few of my etsy team mates. Dales came to town and a few of us, Cindy, Asuka and Sans met up for dinner and drinks. Go visit Dales's blog for her photos of Singapore ;) I nearly had to cancel the dinner appointment, but was glad I could make it eventually!

Large Tarte Profiteroles with Chocolate

I made this a little while ago for my friend, Marie who wanted a large tarte profiteroles drenched in chocolate sauce...Looks yummy, you think?

I'm also working on some large religeuses, so when I'm done I will have some photos :)

1:12 miniature scale pink peonies in elegant container

I made these a little while back, but just didn't had the chance to post it up. 6 miniature peonies in various shades of pink....a lovely sight in all angles actually.

This one is sold, but I'm going to make another one soon, with different leaves. Just a tad different :)

Sky Gardens

I now work in an office building which is 22 storeys high. It's been a while since I've ever worked in a high rise office building. The thing about working in tall buildings is that you probably miss seeing trees and nature, so I was very excited when I read the building directory and found out that there are Skygardens. Not 1 but 3! This is not cutting edge invention actually. I think in many modern cities, they have already started to incorporate garden concepts in high rise buildings quite a while ago. I told myself that I want to check them out someday :)

The other day after lunch, I dropped by the Level 5 Skygarden and was just amazed with it. Water features, green plants, shelter from the sun and lots of wind! What a nice quiet oasis. Too bad I wasn't carrying my phone with me, so I couldn't take photos. I told myself I would come back another time to take some photos.

So today after a quick lunch, I had some time and I wanted to visit this beautiful sky garden again. The photo quality is not great since they are taken from my phone, but I just wanted to share its beauty with my readers here.

Green plants lined up on the path way.

Want to take a seat?

Really nice here..

First Day of Work

First day of work went by. My new laptop (they ordered a brand new laptop for me) doesn't arrive till next week, so I'll be using a spare one at the meantime. I was reading some materials in the afternoon while my boss had to go for a meeting. Then I joined in the later meeting which was meant to be 0.5 hr but ended up as a 2 hr meeting. My director jokingly asked if I would still turn up for work tomorrow...LoL..

Last week, I made lots of 1:12 scale miniature peonies, in a variety of shades. Honestly I don't have a fix idea of how I'm going to use them yet, but I just want to experiment on making them in a variety of shades of pink, champagne, peaches...and I guess I'll stop when I eventually run out of shades to make them in, or when I get bored.

Perhaps I will get another shot to show the shades this weekend.

Meanwhile, a shot of them in my hand...

The pinks so far...

1:12 scale miniature rusty old weathered pot

I recently transformed a silver pot to make it look really old and rusty. I really like it, because I recently has a fond liking for old, rusty, weathered things...

Put some flowers into it, and it now looks really special...

New Beginnings

Yesterday was kind of surreal, and I have mixed emotions. Yesterday was my last day of work in my old company. I was there for almost 4 years. That was the 2nd longest employment I had held in one company. It didn't really feel like 4 years, maybe now that I think about it, time passes so quickly when you are busy with day to day. As some of you may have known, I have been going for several job interviews but nothing came out of it. I believe that things happen for a reason. This time, things happened so quickly that I just didn't had the time much to ponder as I was really up to my neck trying to settle many things.

It would be a lie if I said I was not afraid of changes. But change is constant and I tell myself that I have to embrace it and be brave. I will miss my colleagues, and of course the camaraderie that we have built. The people factor is very important to me. Many of my friends who know my situation have all said it's for the better. I hope that I will continue to build friendship, and great teamwork in the new workplace. I'm proud that in the past 4 years, I learnt to build solid teamwork with people whom I have to work across the world, even without ever meeting them in person. I'm proud that when I'm being tasked to do global projects, I'm able to come up with processes that help me and my team, and it gets better each time I do it. That's the goal I set for myself actually - that I improve each time I do it. I'll do things better than the previous time.

I've learnt to sharpen my communication skills, be patient, listening more and talking less. Sometimes it's really hard when you don't see the other person's face and all the work you do is through email and sometimes phone.

Creating miniatures helps to relieve stress and it is something I will continue to do.

I made some miniature gifts for two of my colleagues who bought me farewell lunch. I did it last weekend. I'm also going to make something for another colleague overseas...

I hope that when they are feeling stressed out, they can look at my miniature pieces and let it take their stress away...

1:12 scale miniature peonies

I'm around...

Well actually I have been back for a week, but have been terribly busy that I don't have much time for anything else. I have some news to share the next time.

But first...

I have been intrigued by peonies for a long time...and I'm not the first one who have tried making them in miniature scale. I am intrigued by their fat rounded shape, and especially when they are not so ready to be in full bloom yet....you know what I mean? So in the peonies I make, I really like making them in that state :)

I am a little strange, I know.

I like this colour, a little soft peach, but currently am going to try making them in various colours. It's going to be interesting!!

Found myself featured...

I'm currently away on a short break, but I am still kind of "working". I had to complete a stressful project before I leave last week, and I am very thankful I completed my monthly project before I left.

Found myself being featured on this blog, which I am so honoured...

Pop by over to take a look!

I can't get enough of hydrangeas

I've been into flowers, plants a bit lately, so I've been making quite a bit of them. I made 2 more miniature plants for friends overseas over the weekend ;)

Recently, I was looking for something in particular and found these photographs in my collection. I totally forgotten that I have taken these hydrangeas photos....and I was very excited when I saw them.

A few years ago, I went to Melbourne and visited a herb farm, strawberry farm and a flower garden. These were some shots I had of the hydrangeas. Look how soft the colours are....

I recently made some 1:12 miniature scale soft pink hydrangeas.... I love how the soft pink colour turned out. What about you?
